Cloud platform

The shift to cloud computing is a big change for the industry. The emergence of various cloud platforms is one of the most important aspects of the transformation. As the name implies, the platform allows developers to either run their written programs in the "cloud," or use services provided in the "cloud," or both. As for the name of such a platform, we can now hear more than one name, such as on-demand platform, platform-as-a-service, and so on. But whatever you call it, this new approach to supporting applications has huge potential.

How the application platform is used. When the development team creates an indoor application, many of the foundations needed for the application are already there: the operating system provides basic support for performing applications, accessing storage, and so on; Other computers in the organization provide services such as remote storage. If we had to build all these foundations first for every indoor application, we would probably see far fewer applications today.


Similarly, if every development team that wants to create cloud applications has to build their own cloud platform first, we will see very few cloud applications in the future. Fortunately, there are a number of vendors working on this problem, and there is a lot of cloud platform technology available today. The main idea of this article is to categorize these techniques from the perspective of enterprise application creators.

To master cloud platforms, let's examine cloud services in general. We can classify services provided through the cloud into three categories. They are:

Software-as-a-service SaaS applications run entirely in the "cloud". Its indoor client is usually a browser or other simple client. Salesforce may be the most well-known SaaS application of the moment, but there are many others.


Attached service: each indoor application has its own function, and from time to time they can access the service provided for the application in the "cloud" to enhance its function. Since these services can only be used for that particular application, they can be thought of as being attached to that application. A well-known example of consumer class is apple's iTunes: its desktop app can be used to play music and so on, and the add-on service makes it possible to buy new audio or video content. Microsoft's Exchange hosting service is an enterprise example of adding cloud-based spam filtering, archiving, and other services to an internal Exchange server.


Cloud platform: cloud platform provides cloud-based services for developers to use when creating applications. You don't have to build your foundation. You can rely on the cloud to create new SaaS applications. Direct users of cloud platforms are developers, not end users.


To master the cloud platform, first agree on the meaning of "platform" here. A common idea is to think of the platform as "any software that provides services for developers to create applications".


Just as indoor applications are built on an indoor basis, cloud applications can also be built on a cloud basis. Both the indoor environment and the infrastructure and application services in the cloud are available for both applications. The indoor platform supports our applications today, and similarly, the cloud platform provides services for the applications we will build tomorrow.
